Berliner Luftbrücke

Posted in Uncategorized

A little bit of history: after WWII  there was a time when West Berlin was surrounded by the Russians and kept blocked off from the West. No food, no medical supplies, nothing reached West Berlin. The Berlin Blockade (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949) was the first major international crises of the Cold War. The Americans flew supplies from Frankfurt over East Germany to West Berlin and saved the Berlin population from starvation. That was the famous ‘Berliner Luftbrücke’. Berlin never forgot what the Americans did for them.

Here is my mother in Frankfurt in 1948 watching an American plane take off for Berlin. God Bless America!
